What is a claim?

A claim is a receipt that verifies your ownership of Bitcoin.

When you connect a wallet or device to Prove and sign a message, we verify that signature and register it in our system as a claim — quite literally, your claim to Bitcoin’s finite supply.

Each claim is tied to a specific source of Bitcoin — like a self-custodial wallet, address, or multisig setup. You can add multiple claims to your account, each representing a different place where you hold Bitcoin.

Claims are the foundation of your statement of ownership and proof of funds. We’re bringing the concept of “being your own bank” to life. Once you prove ownership over a specific chunk of Bitcoin, we can confidently attest that you control it — just like a traditional bank would for its own balances.

In short, a claim is the unit Hoseki uses to track and verify your self-custodied Bitcoin — without ever touching your private keys or taking custody.
